John 16: 13
But when He, the Spirit of truth, comes, He will guide you into all the truth; for He will not speak on His own initiative, but whatever He hears, He will speak; and He will disclose to you what is to come.
There is an implication in this verse. John implies that we are able to hear God speaking with us. The Holy Spirit will speak, and, in his speaking, we hear what is to come. Therefore, we can hear the voice of God. I am excited by this message because if you are listening, your life can be transformed today.
What would it mean to your life if you knew you could hear God speak to you? New question, do you believe the Bible? Or, are you one of those people who make excuses for it? “Oh, yeah, I know the Bible says that, but it doesn’t mean it.” Come on, admit it. We’ve all done it. It can be too much to take in at times, so we make excuses for it; or, more to the point, for ourselves. Let me be your encourager today. Grab your bootstraps and let’s jump in water over our heads.
The Spirit is here to guide you into all truth. How big is that? His job is to speak to us what he hears from the Father. Just imagine the trinity having coffee this morning. The Holy Spirit is taking copious notes as he listens to the Father and Son talk so that he can subsequently disclose whatever he hears to you. Get an image of that. Isn’t that huge? I’m just hoping he is a good note take because I want to learn it all. I am being a bit comical there just to say what a great thing this is for us.
Oh wait! There is a problem. Some of you have been taught that God doesn’t speak to His kids today. What a ridiculous teaching! Logic demands that lie be slain. If God was willing to speak to a disobedient and lost group of wandering Israelites why would His voice be silenced on this side of the cross? That’s just crazy!
Others of you simply haven’t been taught at all. Well, great news! You are being taught by the Word of God today that you should expect the Spirit to guide you into all the truth. Hallelujah.
It turns out that prayer is not really what we thought it was. Many of us pray only petition prayers. That means, we spend our breath telling God everything we think we need. Once we are done with our list, we hang up the phone. What else would we do though? If you don’t know that God will speak with you, then conversation necessarily becomes one way. I can imagine how boring that becomes for God. He wants to have time with his kids, sharing together. How is that going to work if no one is listening for Him to speak?
Now, here is the important question; do you want to hear God speaking with you? I’m not being facetious. You know there will be a price, and you may just not feel you want to invest your energy here or are up to it at the moment. However, what if you really do want to be able to chat with Yahweh? Where do you begin? The first step isn’t all that hard.
Step one is to believe, with your heart, what today’s scripture implies; namely that God is speaking with us and that you can hear Him and be led by Him. As you become convinced that talking with God is a real thing, you will already open the doors to begin to hear him.
