This is the very essence of overcoming; this explains how we have become overcomers. I think we sometimes believe that trouble will not come our way because we are in Christ and it is a great cause of confusion and disappointment when we find ourselves embroiled in turmoil. Yet, Jesus promises we can have peace even in the midst of trouble because he has overcome the world for us.
The easiest explanation or illustration of this principle is found in Psalm 23. Verse 4 reads, “Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I fear no evil, for You are with me.” It is his presence with us that makes even the valley of the shadow of death, not only bearable but, a place where we may still triumph.
Verse five continues this picture of overcoming strength in Christ’s grace. “You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies.” Even when trouble abounds, Jesus prepares a feast for you where you may sit and dine at your leisure. You needn’t worry, nor look over your shoulder continuously for he has prepared your banquet. He has provided both the sustenance and the security.
All of this is meant to say, when you see trouble coming your way, do not despair. Do not fret. Since Jesus has overcome the world and all its trouble, we may walk through the valley of despair without experiencing its torments. We are in him and he is in us (John 14: 20).
Abide in him. Listen to the voice of his guidance and allow his overcoming to become your victory.
