I received an ad, this week, for an app with relaxing sounds, meditations and more. It sounded pretty good, but it was expensive. Then again what price does one put on peace on tranquility of the soul? Then I saw this verse and I realized that here is where I find calm. This is where people have found their peace of mind and heart for thousands of years.
Salvation encompasses much more than simply eternal life. That is enough, certainly, but when I think of salvation it means more to me. It means rest and safety. It means security from the problems which surround me. David was often surrounded by his enemies which is why it may be so easy for us to relate to him. We often feel surrounded, as well, and just as God was David’s refuge, He is our hideaway too.
Until recently, we didn’t have apps and white noise to help calm our nerves. What the generations before us had was God’s Word. Don’t get me wrong, I love my nature sounds; you’ll often find me working to the Frog Chorus. I have nature sounds on my phone even. I am not negating the benefit of any app or product, use them all, but what I don’t want us to lose is the one thing that works best. God! He is our strong tower. He silences the noise and allows us to feel safe. He is the port in the storm.
David learned to be still, to be quiet and perceive the calming blessing of God. He rested in God’s saving presence learning how to absorb the peace which comes with our Lord. Begin with a breath, just take a deep breath and turn your heart to looking for the Father. Be still and let Him drench you with His peace.
