Proverb 2: 6

For the LORD gives wisdom; from His mouth come knowledge and understanding.

You probably like all of God’s good gifts. Where does wisdom rank? I had a friend once who, though she had spent years in the Bible, said she never really got into Proverbs. This one of the first books I was attracted to because wisdom is all over it. I figure if you have the wisdom of God, you are likely going to be in pretty good shape.

The question becomes, “How do you position yourself for God’s wisdom? Where do you place yourself so you can hear the knowledge and understanding that comes from His mouth? Verses 1 – 5 give us those answers: “My son, if you will receive my words and treasure my commandments within you, make your ear attentive to wisdom, incline your heart to understanding; for if you cry for discernment, lift your voice for understanding; if you seek her as silver and search for her as for hidden treasures; then you will discern the fear of the Lord and discover the knowledge of God.” That’s good, isn’t it?

God actually wants to give you His wisdom. He has stored it up for you but there is something you must do. Sometimes I wish Father would rain all of His wisdom and goodness down upon us, but it just does not work that way. We must put ourselves in the position to receive. I often think of American football. The quarterback intends to pass the ball downfield to his wide receiver. It is his desire. However, if the wide receiver never runs his pattern, there is no one to throw to. We need to just run the pattern God called in the huddle and He will take care of getting us the ball. Then we can run with it.

Today’s word tells us which pass pattern to run so that we will receive wisdom, knowledge and understanding. You’ve got to want it, ask for it and listen. We have to pay attention to His words and commandments. Which commandments, you ask. Every word which proceeds from His mouth. In our seeking, there is finding. A hungry heart will be satisfied. Now, go deep!

Knowledge, Wisdom & Understanding

Proverb 1: 7, 22

The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge; fools despise wisdom and instruction. How long, O naïve ones, will you love simplicity? And scoffers delight themselves in scoffing. And fools hate knowledge.

Proverb 9: 10 reads, “The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom, and the knowledge of the Holy One is understanding.” Interesting. So, knowledge and wisdom come from a relationship with the Lord. Further, knowing the “Holy One” brings understanding. We, therefore, have access to wisdom, knowledge and understanding through our relationship with the Holy Trinity. Would you think it fair to say that the closer we are in our relationship with the Father, Son and Spirit, the more easier it will be for us to tap into their knowledge and wisdom? Will it be easier for us to gain understanding? I think that is a reasonable conclusion.

Jesus’ brother, James wrote an encouraging passage in his letter. It reads, “If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all men generously and without reproach, and it will be given to him” (James 1: 5). James points out that God is the source of wisdom. That is not difficult to believe. He also reveals us, though, that God gives us His wisdom and that He does so freely.

Today’s verse also points out that fools hate knowledge. Well, it is no surprise that anyone who hates knowledge is deemed a fool by God but what is perplexing is why anyone would hate knowledge. Why would anyone revel in scoffing rather than gaining knowledge, wisdom and understanding? The answer seems to be in the word “scoff”. Synonyms for scoffing are: jeering, sneering, ridiculing, and deriding. It seems that some folks would rather sneer at others rather than invest the time and energy in seeking God and His wisdom. Let’s be frank. It takes time and energy to get to know God. It takes effort to open your heart and mind to His guidance. It takes faith to believe what you hear. All of this is so worth the small amount of effort but fools scoff at the idea instead of trusting that God will really meet them in the solitude of quiet time.

The really good news is that God honestly does give out knowledge. He really does dole out wisdom and He really does bestow understanding. The bad news is that these priceless gifts rarely come from the prayer, “God give me wisdom.” As soon as you pray that prayer He will try to lead you into time with Him where He can reveal His fullness to you. The reverence of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge. The respect, admiration and veneration of the beloved is the beginning of wisdom. Wisdom, knowledge and understanding are the by-products of a life lived with God. As we open our hearts to Him and pour our lives into Him, we find all good things. Holding God in high esteem is the path. Time spent with Him yields all.

Follow the Light

Psalm 18: 28

For Thou dost light my lamp; the Lord my God illumines my darkness.

It is nice to know that the Lord is your light in dark times. No matter how tumultuous the situation nor how bleak the horizon, God is your ever present light shedding illumination on your path. You do not have to remain in the darkness. His light will lead you out.

His light reveals the wisdom and knowledge for every circumstance. It is the key idea which launches your project or saves you valuable time. It is the beacon that attracts the right people at the right time. It is the insight to the best decision. It is even light and life to your body.

Let your Father be the lamp unto your feet. Just follow the light.

Do It Now

Isaiah 5: 13

Therefore, My people go into exile for their lack of knowledge; and honorable men are famished, and their multitude is parched with thirst.

Lack of knowledge leads to slavery, starvation and thirst. The people were led away in exile from the land God gave them to be slaves to others and all because of a lack of knowledge. What knowledge did they lack? Were they complete idiots or was it something specific?

We know from history that every time the Israelites turned away from God and His Word, tragedy befell them. They may have been some of the most worldly wise people ever but only the Word from God, the Word of God was able to save them from bondage, famine and unquenchable thirst. Just think of the Israelites in their exodus from Egypt. They would have starved, they could not find water but each time the Word of the Lord came to Moses and the people were spared. What if they had inquired of the Lord daily instead of only when the situation was dire? Maybe they could have walked on the water of the Red Sea instead of waiting as the Egyptians drew closer and closer. God gave them manna each morning and opened rocks, literally rocks, to bring forth water to quench their thirst.

Of course the real importance of this is verse is the question, “How similar are we to these Old Testament saints who died for lack of knowledge?” (Hosea 4: 6). I fear that we are all too similar. Sure, our prisons are different, but perhaps even more perilous than theirs because we can never leave ours behind. The chains which bind us are within us. Romans 12: 2 tells us to be transformed through the renewal of our minds. It is the Word of the Lord renewing our minds, filling us with the knowledge of His ways which sets us free. How many of us truly dedicate ourselves to God’s Word? Do we scoff at the ignorance of the people in the Old Testament but are guilty of the same mistakes? Do we truly believe that God’s Word has any power? Or are we secretly doubters? If not doubters, are we just lazy? Perhaps we are deceived by busyness. If there is not time enough in the day for God’s Word then how is there time for anything? We are so busy with the business of life that we live a parched, barren existence. True life can only be found in the Word. I honestly believe this to be true. Do you? Do you really?

Test me in this. Give me 30 days of your life and let’s find out once and for all if this stuff is true or a bunch of bunk. For 30 days, beginning today, read your Bible everyday. It is so easy these days with smart phones and tablets. You can read during your lunch hour at work right from your phone. Do this. Start in the first chapter of Mathew and begin reading. Then read one proverb each day. That’s it – one proverb and as much of the New Testament as you want or have time for. Do this with me for one month. What do you honestly think your life will look like in 30 days if you rise to my challenge and give God this time? Will you write to me today and tell me you’re in? Let’s find out if this stuff works. Be bold.

Filled

Isaiah 33: 5 – 6

The LORD is exalted, for He dwells on high;
He has filled Zion with justice and righteousness.
And He will be the stability of your times,
A wealth of salvation, wisdom and knowledge;
The fear of the LORD is his treasure.

God gives us His justice and righteousness. The Bible says that we have become the righteousness of God in Christ Jesus (2 Corinthians 5: 21). We do not have to manufacture our own justice and righteousness. We have only to walk in His righteousness.

As we do, besides becoming our peace, he also becomes our stability. Another translation says that He becomes a “sure foundation” for us. In Him is a wealth of salvation for every situation. He saves us in all things. His salvation is more full than the salvation unto eternity with Him alone. It includes salvation anytime you need saving. We also receive a wealth of wisdom and knowledge so that we have His wisdom and knowledge for every circumstance of life.

And, as if that was not enough, we also walk in the reverence of the Lord, which is a gift from Him too. The reverence of the Lord, that relationship that we learn to walk in is a treasure trove in and of itself. Once you have the reverential love of the Lord in your heart, you have the key to unlocking anything and everything. It is the wisdom of God. The scripture says that the fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom (Proverb 9: 10). You will not have need of anything because His wisdom, knowledge and power are on the scene to lead you into all righteousness which also leads you into all other things too. It is a cycle that keeps you filled up with all of the goodness of the Lord.

Mysteries

Daniel 2: 28

However, there is a God in heaven who reveals mysteries.

The truth of this verse is so well demonstrated in Daniel’s life. God gave King Nebuchadnezzar dreams which revealed mysteries. Daniel was in the position to give the King the interpretation of those dreams. Some of the mystery revealed by God through Daniel and through those dreams is being further unveiled in our time.

God has stored up all knowledge and wisdom for us. What is hidden is hidden for us. It is very much like a parent putting away something precious for safekeeping so that they may give it to their child at the appropriate time. Dad has storehouses of wisdom for us. It is His delight to shower upon us all of His good gifts including His wisdom, knowledge and the great mysteries of life. We can know His mind, His will and His intentions because He is not keeping secrets from us, He has stored them for us.

If we are to succeed in this world, if we are to live our dreams then we must receive God’s thoughts. If we already had the answers, we would already be where we want to be. So, we need to humble ourselves before Him and allow Him to reveal His brilliance to us rather than to try to forge alone with only our limited knowledge to guide us. Be encouraged because He longs to reveal every mystery to us whether that is the theory of relativity or what to cook for dinner. He is ever present and desires to walk hand in hand with each of us every day.

Knowledge is Power

Ephesians 5: 17

So then do not be foolish, but understand what the will of the Lord is.

I have an expression I like to use which is, “There is an easy way and a hard way to do everything. When possible, use the easy way.” Paul said, “Do not be foolish.” Okay, so understanding the will of the Lord is the easy way to live and to succeed. Knowing God’s will is like taking the inside track. The converse is trying to figure it out for ourselves.

I am all for education. As a matter of fact, a friend’s mother chides me that I will be the most educated person in the graveyard. Well, I’ve never put a lot of stock in ignorance. However, no amount of human education will ultimately equip us for the battles of life. Ignorance won’t either but there is another choice. We can live in the knowledge and wisdom of the Lord. Actually, that was the original plan.

God did not call us to Him so that we could toil and worry. His calling is so that we can step into our positions as His beloved and live in the fullness of His provision. If we aren’t living in that abundance yet, then we still have the need of more understanding. Of course, the pursuit of understanding the Lord’s will is the journey of this lifetime. Those who are wise instead of foolish will seek His will every day, really every minute. When you know the will of God you will have the confidence to release His power and authority in every aspect of life. You will truly be unstoppable. For those who persist in seeking and knowing God’s will, nothing shall be impossible.

In absolutely everything you do today, pause and seek the Lord. Seek His will. Let Him guide you in every single step. Even the smallest matters are of importance to Him. You will find that you save yourself time and a great deal of effort. Knowledge really is power but only when it is the knowledge of God’s will for you.
